Supporting Raytheon's
Sustainability Goals: A Comprehensive Green IT Strategy
Brian Moore, Principal Architect,
Raytheon
Raytheon's comprehensive Green IT
Strategy has begun to have a broad impact on Raytheon's
sustainability goals, including helping Raytheon achieve its
greenhouse gas reduction goal of 33% lower per dollar
revenue from 2002 to 2009, one year early. The strategy not
only addresses the environmental footprint of IT operations
(data centers, desktops, printers,) but also focuses on
partnering with other functions to leverage IT capabilities
to reduce their process footprint. Since this Sustainable IT
strategy includes partnering with programs to pursue and
execute green-related external business, it provides an
opportunity for IT to contribute to direct business growth,
although the potential value of new business has not yet
been projected. Total savings achieved by the strategy in
2008 were $11.45M. Of this, $2.7 M resulted directly from
server-related energy savings, $250K from the initial
progress on desktop power management, and $1.5 M from
printer-related savings. The remaining savings were a result
of reducing server lease expenses, facilities footprint
costs, and data center labor. And the cost of building a
major new data center was avoided despite a 25% growth in
capacity demand, a direct result of our virtualization
efforts.
In 2009 Raytheon
received the Uptime Institute Global Green 100 and the
InfoWorld Green 15 awards. This presentation will tell the
story of how these successes were achieved and discuss how
Raytheon plans to "take Green IT to the next
level." |
